Akhuwat's Journey.

Akhuwat started in 2001, with a vision to eradicate poverty by helping people to help themselves. Our flagship scheme, Qarz-e-Hasna – microlending without interest (usuary) set a new precedent among Islamic charities and in traditional banking. Since then, our organisation has grown from strength to strength, earning international recognition. Akhuwat’s inspiring journey is detailed in our timeline below.

2001
AKHUWAT AS AN IDEA
  1. Feb – Akhuwat’s Inception
  2. 26th March – Operations Commence
  3. 3. April – disbursed first 2 amounts of Rs. 10,000 to recipients.
2003
AKHUWAT REGISTRATION
  1. May – Akhuwat’s Registration got registered under the Societies Act as a Not for Profit Organisation.
  2. December – Borrowers Tea Parties at Governor’s House – 500 borrowers hosted.
2004
PAKISTANI PRESIDENT AT EVENT
  1. Fundraising and Qarz-e-Hasna disbursement event held at Governor’s House presided over by the president of Pakistan.
2005
WOMEN EMPOWERMENT DASHBOARD LAUNCHED
  1. Funds provided to1100 women in Aiwan-e-Iqbal where Lt. Gen. Ret. Khalid Maqbool was the chief guest.
  2. November: 600 Women Empowerment Qarz-e-Hasna disbursed.
  3. Prominent figures invited to join Akhuwat as lifelong supporters.
2006
MILESTONES REACHED ON SOCIAL DASHBOARD
  1. April: Akhuwat was represented at the International MF Event (Morocco).

2010
REGISTRATION IN UNITED KINGDOM
  1. 10th June – United Kingdom Government Registration.
  2. 18th November – 50th branch opened in Nowshera.
  3. Qarz-e-Hasna Disbursement Event in honour of the Italian Government. Event graced by His Excellency, Vicenzo Prati.
  4. Qarz-e-Hasna dispersed to 4,000 borrowers.
2011
ONE BILLION DISBURSEMENT
  1. March: PKR 1 Billion in advances disbursed to 90,000 families.
  2. 3000 families received Qarz-e-Hasna funds at Mosque Data Ganj Baksh (RA). The event was graced by the Chief Minister of Punjab. Partnership with the Government of the Punjab launched.

  1. 22nd March: Muhammad Amjad Saqib delivers a lecture at Harvard University.
  2. March-April: Whirlwind tour of the US introducing Akhuwat.

DR. AMJAD SAQIB SPEAKS AT UNITED NATIONS
  1. April: Dr Amjad Saqib delivers lecture at United Nations.
  2. June: Dr Saqib presented “Akhuwat ka Safar” in the United Kingdom (Birmingham, Oxford, Cambridge and London).
  3. Attended Panel Discussion: “An Interaction with Donor and Funding Agencies” in Cambodia.
  4. Registered as a legal entity in Uganda, Africa.
  5. Attended the 30th RCCI Awards in Turkey.
  6. Dr Amjad Saqib introduced Akhuwat ka Safar at the Independence Day event in Sweden.

2018
ANOTHER MILESTONE
  1. MoU Signing Ceremony between Akhuwat and Ali Akbar Group – Ali Akbar Group to provide technical assistance and discounts on its products to Akhuwat beneficiaries (facilitating tools and technology access to beneficiary farmers).
  2. PKRs 50 billion disbursed – Mehfil-e-Tilawat-e-Quran and beautiful Quran recital by Qari Sadaqat Ali celebrate Akhuwat’s spectacular achievement. Mian Muhammad Rafique Rajwana, Governor of the Punjab attended.
  3. Akhuwat Sindh – disbursed more than PKRs billion with a 100% recovery rate. Qarz-e-Hasna disbursed to 45,000 families.
  4. Abdul Rehman Arif – a student of Akhuwat College Lahore granted a fully funded merit scholarship at Sukkur IBA University to study Electrical Engineering.
  5. Mega Qarz-e-Hasna Disbursement Ceremony at Badshahi Mosque: 25,000 Families received funds through our Qarz-e-Hasna scheme under the CM’s Self-Employment Scheme, benefiting 1.85 million households.
  6. Azmat Pakistan Foundation Tribute Ceremony.
  7. Mehfil-e-Tilawat-e-Quran-e-Pak held in Faisalabad, on achievingPKR 50 Billion disbursement among the marginalised fellow citizens.
  8. 17-year anniversary celebration at Governor’s House, Lahore. Its seventeen years of phenomenal success.
  9. “Islamic Economic Award”presented by the Islamic Economic Organisation (in collaboration with Istanbul University).
  10. Highest Compliments for the citizens of “Shahar a Iqbal” – PKR 35 million raised for Akhuwat University- Dinner hosted by Deputy Commissioner Sialkot.
  11. Akhuwat honours Sardar Ramesh Singh Arora and Amin Hafeez.

  13. 127 new families granted Qarz-e-Hasna funds and clothing gifts in Chitral.
